Internal speaker sound

Is there something I can do to have my volume increase and decrease like it used to do. At present, the volume is very low and will not increase. It will decrease, so there is some function. I can barely hear sound even when the volume is up to maximum. This is an old (by today's standards) iMac. (2012)

Regarding iMac Built-in speakers So, I'm curious, has anyone found a way to equalize the built-in speakers of an iMac? When I play a movie, bkgd audio is always so much louder than the dialog. Any way to balance them?

Imac 2019, volume too low The volume of my iMac Retina 5K, 2019 is really low. I tried to go into my "system preferences" under "sound", when I select "built-in" the sound comes back a lot louder but only for 1 or 2 seconds, and then becomes real low again... My Current IOS is BigSur 11.3.1. What do you suggest? Thanks. Matt

Try resetting the SMC.

I did the ten second shut down and then five second reboot and all is well. Thanks so much.

To use the F keys to raise and lower the sound be sure this checkbox is unchecked:

Also you can also get the volume control in the menu bar by checking this checkbox:
