Internal speaker sound

Is there something I can do to have my volume increase and decrease like it used to do. At present, the volume is very low and will not increase. It will decrease, so there is some function. I can barely hear sound even when the volume is up to maximum. This is an old (by today's standards) iMac. (2012)

Try resetting the SMC.
