I cannot open AVCHD files with Quick time anymore. It used to work then stopped. Is there an update to quick time or is there a converter required now and if so, does anyone know of one that works well and not costly?

I understand you are unable to open AVCHD files in QuickTime.
As stated here: Using AVCHD files with QuickTime Player, QuickTime does support AVCHD files.
Therefore, I would recommend ensuring your Mac is up to date. You can learn how to do so here: How to update the software on your Mac.
It may also be worth re-importing the files incase any issue occurred during the previous import.

There are many apps available. If you search 'AVCHD' in the Mac App Store, you will see a wide selection that you can choose to suit your needs.
