My Macbook freezes when restarting after upgrades

When my Macbook tries to restart after an upgrade, such as the one it did last night to Catalina 10.15.5, it always freezes on the screen 'Improve Siri & Dictation'. None of the options on that screen are responsive and I have to hold down the power button until the Macbook shuts down and then restart in order to get past it. I have searched google and cannot find mention of this. Am I the only one with this issue? If not, is there a fix? Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Hello Gibbo58 and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

I see you are having an issue with a Mac that is freezing at the same place in the process after multiple updates. There are a couple of steps that can help isolate issues such as this. Ideally you would do both before immediately before the next update.

1) Start by doing a safe boot of the Mac. This will clear some cache files and give you a good foundation. After doing the safe boot, reboot normally and test.

2) If the issue persists after a safe boot, set up a test user account in order to isolate the issue to the system or the user data and ultimately resolve it.

Alex, firstly thanks for your reply!

I may not have been precise in describing my problem. The macbook only freezes the once on the first reboot after an upgrade. Subsequent restarts are fine until the next upgrade.

I shall give the safe boot a go though and it will be interesting to see if it helps when Apple send out their next upgrade!

One way or another, I will update this support log when I have something to report!
