Cannot drag a contact into a group in the Contacts app

Running OS X 10.15.5 Catalina. Ever since the Catalina upgrade, I've had problems adding contacts to groups. None of my groups are smart groups, and the drag & drop functionality from prior OS X releases is often -- not always -- failing.

Workaround is to quit Contacts, then restart the Contacts app while holding down the shift key. Then the drag & drop function works again.

Thanks for this advice! It works with existing contacts, they will drag and drop into new group.

However, what I still can't do is create a new contact. When I click + a fresh card comes up, I begin to add information then it jumps to the next name in contacts and I'm left with a long list of 'Name' in my contacts. I have done everything including a reinstall. Still it won't work.

There's very little on the web and Apple is strangely silent for a pretty significant issue for those of us trying to sort out our Christmas card addresses!
