Trying to update from Mojave to Catalina. System starts checking for updates and after a long time it gives a message that it is "timed out". iMac 21.5, late 2013, running Mojave.

I am trying to update iMac 21.5, late 2013, from Mojave’s to Catalina. The System Preference starts to check for updates. After a fairly long time it gives a message that checking updates has timed out. I have also tried to download Catalina from App Store page but that also opens the “Checking for Updates” window.

Thanking for any support in advance.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.14

Connect your mac to your router via cable, do not rely on WiFi.
