Continuous 'Service Exited in system log

I get the following continuously in my system log. Any advice on what it is and how to stop it?

Thanks

This can also occur when migrating from a version of OS X/MacOS that didn't require signed mdimporters (usually provided by apps claiming file name suffixes). They'd be found in /Library/Spotlight/ and they can be deleted by sudo from someone with administrator access. Like throwing a switch and those messages stop in the system log.

Found out by forcing a Spotlight re-index and got a pop-up message saying the UID mdworker.shared.0A000000-0500-0000-0000-000000000000 or so, the second numerical field would be a volume that can't be scanned by an unsigned mdimporter and the process gets killed (too fast for you to get the identifying info in the Activity Monitor).

The one I recall adding in Mavericks was epub.mdimporter (an archive). Managed to pass all the way through the Migration Assistant for Big Sur 11.1 (on a Macbook Air M1).

Getting rid of the messages made my day.

I had the same issue.

Disappeared after adding all disks to exclusion list of Spotlight.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201716

They appeared again after removing my main disk (=SSD) from the list, which rebuilds the Spotlight index.

When rebuilding this message shows up (2x):

I tried a variety of suggestions and then went into the Spotlight Preferences and turned off all the checkboxes in the Search Results tab.

Now, instead of getting 5 of these per second in the System Log, I'm getting about 1 per minute.

Now I'm seeing another odd one.

This is the 'quick fix' to this problem: Disable spotlight.

For me it's happening on a 10.14 Mac, it is introduced by installing the 2020-003 or 2020-004 security updates for at least 10.14+

Here is how to disable Spotlight:

  1. Open Terminal
  2. run: sudo mdutil -i off -a
  3. type your password if requested.
  4. you should see output like the following:
# sudo mdutil -i off -a
2020-09-14 11:48:43.091 mdutil[1010:20698] mdutil disabling Spotlight: / -> kMDConfigSearchLevelFSSearchOnly
        Indexing disabled.

To test and make sure indexing is off, try: sudo mdutil -s -a (-s is for "status" and -a means "show all drives")

it should also say Indexing Disabled as well.

Later on, when/if lazy Apple fixes this issue, you can re-enable indexing with sudo mdutil -i on -a
