Prevent black screen on iphone after qr code is scanned

Curbside pickup at one major chain store involves the employee scanning the QR code for my order displayed on my iPhone XR. A few seconds after the scan, my screen goes black. The phone is still functional, but I can't see anything, so I do a hard reset to restore the screen's brightness. Is there any other solution to this problem that would allow me to restore the screen brightness without doing a hard reset?
