This 4 digit code is the code that you created at time of setup. It’s the security code that you created. There is nowhere to get that other then for you to know it when you put it on during setup. If someone else set it up and they don’t remember the code you can check out If you forgot the passcode on your iPad, or your iPad is disabled - Apple Support and see if you can get the information you’re looking for here. As long as you have the Apple ID and password that was used when it was setup you should be able to get it reset so you can get the refund. Make sure that you removed it from your Apple ID though so that Activation Lock won’t be stuck on it.

I just purchased a new IPad, transferred data to new one and sending old one back for credit. Flowing directions with return kit, I clicked on settings, general, reset and put in my Apple password, then a small window appears asking me for a 4 digit restricted code?? What is that? I’ve entered the only 4 digit code I can remember. No effect! I am unable to erase as I’ve tried this many times. Now what?
