iOS 13.5.1 battery drain

The battery drain from background activity in iOS 13.5.1 is horrible. Happens on several apps, currently Bloom berg and Teamsnap. Same problem on my iPad and my wife's iPhone Xs. Come on Apple, this needs to be fix now!

in that case it is apps that have not been modified to run on the new OS and have runaway background usage, Viber fir example.

or a busted phone.

Nothing in 13.5.1 itself is causing this.

So to test this ( yes effort required)

  • backup
  • restore to factory settings as though you were selling it - see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351
  • Set it up with your apple account
  • Check battery usage in that vanilla environment.
  • Restore from backup.

Since the 13.5.1 update my iPad won't charge if I let it run down to zero. I have tried soft resets, etc. The fix is to let it get really dead, then leave it connected to my computer overnight. Happens the same way 4 times in a row. I believe it was the recent update, but I'm taking it into the Apple store to officially log the issue before my warranty expires in 4 weeks

Hey Peter. Tried all of this and more.

On land line w Apple support. They have run tests on my phone (8+max). They say all passes. Battery health 91. Tests great.

Backed up and restored via iTunes with Apple support assisting. Update check on apps. etc...

Turned off background refresh. Un-installed music app and several apps per others suggestions. No apps running.

Nothing works.

Did not have this issue before.

My battery is still draining fast "since the update". ?

A 'Chinese device' vs 'assembled in China' are two different issues. Apparently the English language passed you by.

Just because you choose to go the manual route doesn't take away from Apple breaking the phones and tablets of millions worldwide. We pay for a device to work holistically and not in bits and pieces.

And no the 'difference' is due to Apple not getting their QA + UAT testing in place. We hope it's a mistake and not intentional. None of the workarounds mentioned by you work - either for me or the others on here.

Enjoy your day :)

Same happens with my iPhone7 after updating to this new iOS. I've tried with all fixes and nothing seems to work. I'm seriously worried this will have impact on battery life and possible on the phone as well. This is huge issue.

Apple should be held responsible if this iOS causes damages to hardware! And since the battery is overheating it is most certainly bound to happen.

I've been in Apple family at least 15 yrs now... but those new "improvements" are seriously downgrading what Apple used to be stable, simple and secure.

(note to admin: if Apple should delete my post again, I will make myself heard otherwise)

Tried the iCloud sign out/sign in.... no help. I’m watching the battery drain3% a minute now. It’s worse than even yesterday when it was 2% a minute. Cmon apple, wtf? Waited 30 minutes to get thru to apple today and gave up. I have a life outside of this battery sham.

It also takes forever to charge, I guess because it’s discharging the battery at the same time it’s charging it. This is ridiculous.

Hello GertWouters6,

Thank you so much for replying and that too with such clarity. You're very helpful.

I am facing issue with my iPhone 7 which is just 8 months old. Its battery drains even when it's switched off; from 100 percent charged and switched off in the night... when I switch it on in the morning its 65 percent left. This is happening since 13.5.1 and is continuing with 13.6.

I am in touch with apple support team. They've collected all the logs and diagnostics. Lets see what they will say.

Thank you so much once more for a very helpful response.

Are you really sure that an iPhone which is switched off does not use any energy? The phone still maintains number of processes and states while it is off. Let me know if I’m wrong. When I switch my phone on after it is switched off for almost 10 hours or so... I see Siri activity... I personally never use Siri...

Also is the phone system is showing battery performance at 100%. Is that wrong? Can that reading be faulty?

Do we have answers to these questions?

I turn it off with the power off slider... and it does not seem to fully off despite that. You’re right there. And this is going on since updating to 13.5.1.

So the software could make the phone continue some processes even after the phone is switched off from the slider? As compared to my other devices... iPad Pro 10.5, iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone XR... this iPhone 7 is slightly warmer... and all the other devices have become more efficient in battery usage since 13.6.... but not this iPhone 7

Thank you for your response...

It pains me to say this, but I have about had enough as I can take with this. I finally fixed the issue by just getting rid of my iPhone X and getting another brand. I'd simply come to the end of my tether with regards to the issues. The iPhone X is a beautiful phone; however the software quality is sub-par at best leading to battery-destroying problems. This does not appear to have been resolved in later revisions of iOS either.

Sorry Apple, I just needed a phone to get me through the day without hassle; alas, your software destroyed my experience, and my battery.

I px'd my iPhone X for a Samsung S10 5g. The difference is night and day to be fair. I've always liked iPhones, however, this just last problem pushed me over the edge.

I do still have an iPhone 6s which is unaffected as it's on an older software version. Worth noting that the 6s can last all day and more even though the phone is significantly older than the iPhone X I had and has never had a replacement battery.

My iPad 6 on iOS 13.5.1 never had the issues either.

Thank you for your help and suggestion. I’ve already tried your method. I’ll wait to see if any improvements come.

I also did settings reset.... by doing “Reset All Settings”.

I did it for three devices together as they all are on the same Apple ID.

I do see some minor improvements. Like instead of getting to see 65 percent battery In the morning after switching my phone off (switched off fully by slider) at night with full 100 percent charge, today morning the charge left was 72 percent.

My iPhone 7 loses battery loses battery at a consistent pace... whether switched off or on.... and it’s slightly warm (Not really hot as reported by many of the members here) almost all the time. Slightly warm at upper right corner. If this information is useful to make any diagnosis.
