You can upgrade as high as El Capitan OS 10.11.6, but no higher. You can get El Capitan using this link:

The reason is because the hardware in your Mid-2009 MacBook Pro is no longer compatible with a macOS that is newer than 10.10.5. If you were able to update, for example, then your machine would have had extreAxmely low to perhaps no performance while attempting to perform even some of the most basic tasks. Your entire experience around your MacBook Pro would be very poor and unsatisfactory.
