How do I get it to go to landscape mode? It used to switch back and forth depending on the position it was in.

From the extreme top-right of your screen, swipe downwards to reveal the Control Centre. You may have the Rotation Lock set here.

If you have an older model iPad, it will have a physical side-switch on the edge. This switch can be configured, in Settings, the either activate the Rotation Lock - or to Mute the sound on your iPad.
Try flipping the physical switch to the other position.
