SSD RAID vs. HHD RAID 7200 rpm

I've got to dump about a dozen 5TB drives onto a single RAID drive to do the editing for a film shot over 6 years. I'll be working with a new 16" MacBook Pro all decked out with everything. Has anyone done enough work on something like a ThunderBlade SSD RAID setup, to be able to compare it to a ThunderBay 8 Thunderbolt 3 RAID drive with 7200 rpm drives installed?

Doesn't have to be those specific makes. I'm just trying to figure out if working in SSD is going to be that much faster than working in HHD? ... when we're talking about external drives. Is it worth the serious extra cost?

I'm also considering that I do all my own audio and final mixes, and have worked with very noisy RAID drives in the past that made editing exhausting with all the fan whir and the clunk and click of the operating drives. And I don't want to have to get into the construction trade to make a sound baffle box for the RAID.

Any advice or suggestions would be most appreciated,

Ben

I believe it is mostly a matter of size vs speed.

In Ben's case, the amount of media is apparently huge, so I'd say a large RAID of HDD is probably what is needed.

For smaller sizes, or basically as long as one can use an SSD with enough space, the speed difference is incredible.

I will never edit using a rotating HD if I can help it. But then again I usually work on small productions at a time.

I know exactly what you mean about noisy environments. We used to use Fibre Channel RAIDs (Apple XRAIDs) and they were great but quite noisy. We now use an 80TB QNAP 10GigE NAS formatted as RAID-6. I was extremely skeptical but after much discussion on the CC Storage forum, I went for it and the unit is incredibly quiet. Technology has come a long way. I would also caution that an AutoDesk setup is not video editing which has different sustained throughput requirements depending on your codec, frame size, frame rate, simultaneous streams, etc. Good luck and let us know how things go!

Thank you terryb,

Haven't been to CreativeCow for years. Will check it out, for sure. Today.

Just got off the phone with one of my collaborators on this particular project ... and to whom I have to justify my expenses -- such as SSD RAID setups. He's an engineer working all the time with most elaborate Auto-desk-like software ... and has no issue with me switching everything over to SSD. The amount of time I've been spending watching spinning beachballs these last few months ... I could have halved that time with a faster system. So I just got the 8 Core MPB, stacked with everything, and want to plug it into the fastest RAID drive I can find. He helped me decide. All the other computers on this project are screaming fast PC's, and all running with SSD drives. But I will happily toodle over to CreativeCow and ask some questions. Thanks for the advice. Ben

Aha! I sit through an executive meeting every Tuesday night with this project. Mostly listening to the team who have built a functioning miniature sun in Mississauga, Ontario. For the last three Tuesdays they've been going on and on about QNAP ... all related to servers and security. I've only been half-listening to those parts of the conversation, as it's not my responsibility. Now I know what QNAP is. I'm going to go take a look. I love the idea of having a huge RAID drive, after dragging this 6 year project along with me on a dozen small drives. I like especially the 'incredibly quiet' par. I've filmed Monty on the AutoDesk and am in awe ... drop down menu after drop down menu after drop down menu ... lists twenty, thirty, choices long. He's using other apps that are even more processor intensive. Thank you terryb ... I'm going to check out your QNAP right now.

Ha ha ha. Here it is if you are curious Tom (see link). Think energy levels comparable to the sun's atmosphere, without radioactivity. A side effect is that it can remediate (neutralize) radioactive waste if you use that as a fuel. Otherwise totally green and clean. There is a 10 minute movie on the home page of both these sites that gives you an idea of what SAFIRE is. I'm cutting a feature film on the overall project, now in its sixth year.

This is the original 'film' site:

Which has now become a commercial enterprise:

Happy viewing. Ben

Hi Luis,

As you can see by my previous note, all I needed was a bit of encouragement from my current collaborators ... to just 'do it'. One of the other reasons for the SSD is the noise or no noise ... there is the new OWC ThunderBlade 8-16TB drives that are dead silent, and screamingly fast. That's what I want. Screamingly fast, and silent. And they can be daisy-chained to handle this rather chunky project. I have this theory that a noisy editing room, fans howling, mechanical drives clanking, exhausts one. Been there so many times. It would be great to be able to do my audio mixes without having to wear noise-canceling headphones. Just a quiet room. What a dream. And at the same speed that I think and can move my fingers.

Onward, upward ...
