Question: Mac Update Can't Restart 15/5/4 to 15.5.5

Hi everyone, ever since I received the notification that 15.5.5 update was ready to rock and roll I cannot restart or log out of my mac. I can reboot by holding the power button but the red notification still appears and the update doesn't execute. I have downloaded the standalone update and tried to install that but it has no effect. I have reset the PRAM/NVRAM and have booted in safe mode and I still cannot get the update to install, something seems to be stopping my mac from restarting. I have quit all applications and tried to restart but still no luck, any help would be greatly appreciated as it's driving me mad!

Kindest Regards

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Hi BDAqua, no VPN's and I have removed malware bytes and little snitch and rebooted but still no luck. I have used CCleaner for years and have had no issues before. When I clock on the update button it greyes out and thinks about rebooting then the button just comes back and nothing happens!

It looks to me like it tries to "start" the install (status bar shows about 5% complete) for a few seconds - then the screen goes completely black and it reboots as if I had selected a "normal" reboot. It's like the install process is just erroring out right away and not finishing at all. Then of course it still shows an update is available and if I try to install it again the whole process just repeats and repeats...

Hadn't thought about external. I've never tried to install from that. I thought maybe it was diskspace (I was down to 6.5Gb free), so I freed up to 12.5Gb but it's still happening so not sure it's that either. Will keep playing around if I can. Not too worried about it at this point.

Oh, I wouldn't ever let the drive get below 30 GB free space, the requirments never take into account all the space need for temp files, unstuffing, and moving things around.

Have seen others have problems until they freed 25 GB.

A bit of an update, I have managed to install the latest 15.5 update by starting in recovery mode and firstly installing a new version of the ios on top of the most recent one. I could then install the newer updates once I had rebooted. I still cannot reboot, restart or log out of my mac using the normal methods but at least the notifications have stopped!
