macOS Catalina installation stalled after clicking on "Install"

I have a 2013 iMac running OS 10.9.5 and I downloaded macOS Catalina to upgrade. When shown the choice of disk to install it on, I chose Install. It is 9 hours later and the macOS Catalina box is still there. There is only a yellow dot (no red or green dot) in the dialog box, and clicking on Install or Back has no effect. Activity Monitor shows no CPU or disk activity. Since I can't close the dialog box, how should I proceed?

Thanks.

In addition to these same symptoms, I am also getting messages that state the following:

  • OS X wants to use the 'Local Items' keychain
  • talagent wants to use the 'Local Items' keychain
  • messagesAgent wants to use the 'Local Items' keychain
  • CalendarAgent wants to use the 'Local Items' keychain
  • AddressBookSourceSync wants to sue the 'login' keychain
  • AddressBookSourceSync wants to sue the 'Local Items'' keychain

And when I try to open safari it is giving error message 1712!

lasltly, I know cannot see any versions of operating software available on the App Store other than Catalina!

Please help!
