When I try an open an old backup file on my external hard drive via Time Machine (example IPhoto), I receive an error message of error 10657. I have searched for an explanation of this error message with no success. I contacted Seagate which is the maker of my external hard drive and this is not their error message. Does anyone know what this error message means? Any suggestions as to what the problem is? These are old backup files from an older IMAC. Thanks for anyone's help.
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
That may be a permissions problem (since they're on a different Mac than the one you're running), but usually you'll get a message to that effect.
But start by
repairing the backups, per #A5 in
Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that finds and fixes anything, try again.
If not, we're going to need some more info. You said iPhoto was an example; do you get the same message with other items? If so, is it
everything else, or just certain things? Is there any sort of pattern, such as everything in one user account, nothing in others?
How old are those backups, and what version of iPhoto was it? Early versions kept the photos in a normal folder; recent ones use a special "iPhoto Library" package that you can't look inside easily.
Also tell us about the relationship between those old backups and your current Mac. Were these your backups, and did you upgrade/migrate from them? What we're looking for is, are you logged-on with a User Account that came directly from the one that did the backups?
