What is the best OS X for Mac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)? Is there any point in upgrading OS if all is working well?

I am about to replace my MacBookPro (13 inch, mid-2011, OS X El Capitan) with a new MacBookPro. When I do, I am wondering if there will be compatibility issues with my iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011, OS X El Capitan). I don't find any OS X upgrades in the App Store for El Capitan.

A Mid 2011 can run High Sierra 10.13.

see > How to upgrade to macOS High Sierra - Apple Support

FWIW High Sierra just received a security updates, which makes is more secure than El Capitan.

OK.....I don't think there should be any huge compatibility issues between your iMac (el capitan) and your new MacBook pro

just one thing to be aware of, Mac713. One thing only. and yes, there are no upgrades in the App Store for El Capitan.

your new MacBook Pro is probably going to come with Catalina, which is fine. BUT, some of your old apps, if you're migrating from

a backup. You did a backup, right? or you will be doing one ?I sure hope you have one.....got off topic there for a minute....anyways back to my point: some of your old apps may need updating to keep working in Catalina.

This is because Catalina does not let 32 bit apps work anymore. If an application/program isn't 64 bit compatible it won't work until it's updated to a catalina friendly version...

that's all

Thank you den.thed... I will back up my iMac and download macOS High Sierra. Catalina is not compatible with my pre-2012 iMac, so it sounds as though I will be upgrading MS Office to be 64-bit compatible with Catalina on the new MacBookPro. I have no experience to know if Word and Excel files can be made to share with both Catalina (64-bit) and High Sierra (32-bit).

Thank you Johnb-one... This is the same reply as below to den.thed...

I will back up my iMac and download macOS High Sierra (per Johnb-one's recommendation). I will check out https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/ even though I'm not a developer...and will check with Microsoft on if there is an Office version that will work with both 32 and 64-bit operation systems.
