Late 2015 is using Thunderbolt 2 -- and you do not need any adapter to connect 2015 iMac with Thunderbolt display.

Thunderbolt display has 2 plugs -- just use the Thunderbolt 2 cable to connect to the back of iMac. If you want, put a small plastic cover to insulate the other plug (it is used for powering the laptop).

By simply plugging in, powering on the iMac -- and you should go to "System Preferences" --> "Displays" for the arrangement of the 2 (Thunderbolt display vs iMac 5K). There is no power button on Thunderbolt display -- It would turn off when iMac is off.

Here is my set up.
