OS's after High Sierra (10.13.6) need a GPU that has Metal. Those GPUs became available in iMacs beginning in 2012. Before you ask, no you cannot upgrade to a Metal GPU and NO there are no work arounds. In short, if you want Catalina it's time to buy a new iMac.
