Typically USB external drives are used for Time Machine and/or other backups.

If you have an older iMac, then you can plug a USB 2.0 or 3.0 external drives into one of the iMac's USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 ports.

If you have a newer iMac, then you can plug a USB 2.0 or 3.0 external drives into one of the iMac's USB 3.0 ports or plug a USB-C external drive into one of the USB-C ports.
