Time capsule - internal disk needs repair

Connect a USB drive that is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to the USB port on the Time Capsule and check to see if you can use the Archive function in AirPort Utility to copy all of the data on the Time Capsule drive over to the USB drive.

If that does not work, the drive has already failed, so if you want to continue at this point, you or a shop will have to pull the hard drive out of the Time Capsule and take it to a data restoration specialist to see if they might be able to recover the data on the drive. This type of thing is extremely expensive......likely $1,000 for starters.....and you pay with no guarantee that the process will be successful.

Few users ever go to this type of trouble or expense, since they should already have the "original" files on their computer and data on the backup drive is simply a copy of that data.

I have had success with tools like data rescue and disk warrior.. but you do need to pull the disk out of the Time Capsule and use a USB enclosure to plug it into your computer.

As with Bob .. there is no reason to do this if you used the TC just for your backups. Get a new USB drive.. plug it into your computer and restart the backups.

If you do want to recover Time Machine backup .. on a drive that has failed.. I doubt you are going to have much success. Time Machine backups are really difficult to reconstruct. If anything is missing they tend to fail completely.

On the hand, if you used the TC to store files, recovery might be possible. But be prepared to pay big dollars to do it.
