audio output input devices disappeared

Today I turned on my iMac for the first time in a month and crazy gremlins have invaded. Biggest issue is my audio output and input devices have disappeared. I use CODEC audio USB for output and input is the built in mic. Nothing shows up and I can't get any volume.

Also, what the heck happened to Garage Band? Suddenly things are changed and I can't record voice lessons!!!

Chrissie, some things to try...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

Reset is an NVRAM reset. You can look over steps on how to Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac.
