iPad is disabled

My mother sadly passed away and her ipad is showing "ipad is disabled, connect to iTunes", but I'm having no luck unlocking it. Any ideas or tips please? I have no box, so not sure which model it is (but unlikely to be the latest!) other than it being a mini.

Sorry about that.

Unfortunately your iPad has two problems:

It is disabled, and you need to follow these instructions to remove that passcode (if your mother didn't make any backup of that iPad content, all the data will be removed and lost):--> If you forgot the passcode on your iPad, or your iPad is disabled - Apple Support

When done, its second problem is that, if you don't know her Apple ID & password, that iPad has "activation lock" and you can't use it, since it requires the credentials that were used to activate that device.

In such a situation, you can ONLY follow this support article, if you are eligible:--> How to request access to a deceased family member's Apple accounts

If you're not eligible, the device is useless to you.

As a close relative, you may be able directly recover access to your late Mother’s AppleID account - as you may possess the relevant knowledge. The following information, written from the perspective of the account owner, may be helpful.


If you have forgotten your AppleID or associated password, these can be recovered here:

https://iforgot.apple.com


To recover your credentials, you’ll need access to one of the following:

  • Your primary email address mailbox that corresponds with your AppleID
  • Any of the secondary/recovery email addresses that should be configured for your AppleID account
  • Any of the trusted telephone numbers (fixed line or Cellular/Mobile) that are associated with your AppleID


Unless you AppleID account has not been fully/correctly configured, or has been seriously neglected, recovery of the AppleID and password should not be difficult.

When you recover access to your credentials, you would be well advised to log-in to your AppleID account from a web browser - and verify/update any email addresses and trusted telephone numbers:
