iPad Air and Apple Pencil

I have just bought the new iPad Air and 1st generation Apple Pencil. I am not able to pair my Apple Pencil, I charged it and tried to connect but am not able. I have my Bluetooth on. I have tried via lightning charger port and by setting it on the magnetic strip and I have not had any success. I have also restarted my iPad 2-3 times, tried the whole connection process... still with no success. Help me!

Yes I’m sure. There are 3 magnetic dots on the left side of my iPad Air. The pencil attaches physically but will not connect

That's not a magnetic strip, that's the smart connector used for the Keyboard. It has no bearing on the Apple Pencil.

On an iPad Air 3, the Apple Pencil pairs and charges through the lightning port only.

When you insert the pencil's lightning connector into the iPad, the pencil should appear in Settings->Bluetooth as connected.

If its not appearing there, then there may be problem with the pencil. You may need to return it, and request a replacement.

Are you sure it’s a first gen?

First gens pair with these models, is yours one of these?

Compatible with

  • iPad Air (3rd generation)
  • iPad mini (5th generation)
  • iPad (6th and 7th generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st and 2nd generation)

If your stuff is compatible, see if anything here helps

Use Apple Pencil with your iPad or iPad Pro - Apple Support

  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch
  • iPad Pro 9.7-inch
