It's meant to go off to save battery,do you have a watch 5 with always on display?.
yes i do. it was always on or rather would be on when i raised my wrist to view. now i always have to tap display. annoying.

is it the 2 faces, happy and sad? that is lit. does that mean it is on?
Yes, if it is lit in orange, and the bell is red they are both on.
i guess that didn't solve my problem. still have to tap screen to get on.
Check in the same place to see if do not disturb is on.
