why does my wifi keep going off and on?

I use a Mac, the internet keeps going off and on, the wifi says looking for network, when this happens anything I'm working on in Sarfari, Firefox or Google stops until its back on. AT&T just replaced the modium but it didn't help. I would think it is my computer but my husband's Mac does the same.

I've been debugging a problem with my VPN client constantly reconnecting, along with poor WiFi performance. After much digging, I came across an excellent article - although written for Yosemite and iOS8, it still seems to be relevant to Mojave, especially with a newer WiFi chip in the 2018 MacBook Pro. https://medium.com/@mariociabarra/wifriedx-in-depth-look-at-yosemite-wifi-and-awdl-airdrop-41a93eb22e48

The author wrote a program that essentially just issues a command and keeps it enforced. You can try it manually in a terminal window: sudo ifconfig awdl0 down

To reverse the command, type: sudo ifconfig awdl0 up

He gives a great technical explanation, so I won't repeat it here. The command disables a virtual network interface that's used for ad-hoc WiFi by features like Airdrop; I personally won't miss them. So far, I've gone from losing my connection 20 times an hour to being stable for 3+ hours.

Hello, thank you for your response. My Mac is located next to the room with the At&t Gateway, which I replaced yesterday, thinking it was the problem. My husband's is connected by Ethernet since his office is farther away. At&t says my Wifi is working correctly, we are fortunate to have the fastest internet available in our neighborhood, and the source is right outside our house.

I read the article you attached, and could pretty much understand most of it, I'm not a computer wiz when it comes to the technical stuff. I turned off Airdrop, unchecked Wake for Network Access, and tried to download the WiFriedX, but didn't have any luck. I also ran a report on the wifi that was sent to Apple.

I'm am not familiar with using the terminal window. I think I have been there on support calls to Apple but don't remember how to access it.

According to what I read it sounds like the Mac has conflicting issues with the items on my wifi. With the new Gateway At&t has an app that allows me to see the items on my wifi, there are 21 if you can believe that. It lists my Macs, Ipads, Iphones, Romba's, Tv's. Its amazing how much we rely on Wifi now adays. Do you think it is all the items on the wifi that is causing the problem? Will the fix you listed with the terminal window fix it do you think?

Thanks again for your time,

Sherry

Sherry, I think it's worth a try, but that's the most devices I've heard of on Wifi !

Terminal is in Applications>Utilities, copy U paste this in the Terminal window...

sudo ifconfig awdl0 down

When you press enter it\ll prompt for your admin password, it will not echo it so type the PW carefully & press enter, if it just comes back with a bew prompt everything is fine &it did it.
