best disk repair utility for late model iMac

Hi all,

I have just had some fusion drive issues on my 2017 27" iMac, running macOS Catalina 10.15.5, that I've resolved with some amount of research. While doing that research, I ran across a list of ten third party disk repair softwares. I used to use Disk Warrior back when running my 2008 mac pro tower and optical drives were still prevalent. I've never heard of some of the softwares on the list. And, none of them can yet repair a mac APFS volume. Interesting.

I don't currently have any third party disk repair utility and was wondering what other people may use and have had good luck with.

Thanks.

Dennis

Your question is a reasonable one. However, I personally think you would be better off to not spend the money on one of those programs. They really aren't necessary. And some problems that crop up can't be fixed by them. We are far better off to develop a practice of doing regular maintenance on our computers to keep them functioning at peak. Here is what I normally do. I periodically run Disk Utility even when there is no known problem. It can sometimes reveal a problem which has not yet manifested, and fix it up front. Sometimes we have to run it multiple times to get the fix done. I regularly empty my browser history to free up RAM, The computer should be restarted periodically, say once a week or so. Once in a while I will do a restart in safe mode to clean the computer's cache and "fix things". Never install any anti virus app. They will cause problems and are not needed because the Mac's OS is read only and can not be infected. Installing the free app Malwarebytes is safe and recommended to use for clearing malware (not viruses). Last, close any open programs you are not using to free up RAM for other purposes. Keep your computer "clean" and do not install a lot of unknown apps which may cause their own problems. A lot of those free programs bring their own issues, which you don't need. Good luck, Dennis.
