Hey there!

This is usually an indication there is something wrong with the filesystem on your MacBook. In some cases it is repairable without any loss of data.

I'd recommend you read the steps over at If your Mac starts up to a question mark – Apple Support. These steps will allow you to reinstall macOS over Wi-Fi assuming your device is able to boot into Recovery Mode.

Those steps would be my first suggestion (try them before going to the effort of putting macOS on an external drive), but you can create a Bootable Installer using your other macOS Device if you would like. Note that this process is much more complex and requires some knowledge of Terminal. If you are interested, you can read about it at How to create a bootable installer for macOS – Apple Support.

Best of luck!
