No iPad sound when connected over HDMI

I am trying to use my new iPad Pro 11 with a USB C hub and an external monitor. Everything works except the fact that I can’t get sound. My monitor has no speakers and I need to use my iPad’s speaker’s, but I cannot find any option that allows me to choose the iPad as my audio source.

HDMI nominally assumes that the device downstream of the source (in this case, the source being your iPad), such as an AV Amplifier or TV/Monitor, is capable of reproducing sound.

The iPad has no configuration setting that allows sound to be reproduced locally, on the iPad, whilst video output is delivered external via an HDMI connection.

I hope this clarification is helpful.
