- when I reboot the keys for the code can put two numbers in or not register a number at all
- Apple support requires a serial number - none that I can find on the phone exterior

As the article states, you may use the IMEI/MEID instead of the serial number.
There are many places the serial number appears, including the original packaging.
All I have is the phone that I have been unable to enter.
