In addition to the information already provided by ProustGiulio, perhaps the most important item to note is that the Split Keyboard feature is not available on iPad Pro 11-inch and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later).
This is the reason that you’re unable to use the Split Keyboard.
