Beware of Scam! Claiming Breach of ICloud - DO NOT install "AnyDesk.com"
Unfortunately, I stupidly fell for a scam. I'm hoping I realized soon enough that no damage has been done. I'm posting this in hopes of warning others.
The caller ID said "Apple Inc". The call back number was Apple Support's actual number.
On the other line was a person with a very thick Indian accent (not trying to be politically incorrect) and introduced himself as "Alex Plaskett" of Apple Technical Support. He claimed my icloud had been breached and my bank accounts were being hacked overseas through my IP address and he needed to walk me through how to stop them. He spoke very quickly with urgency in his voice so I didn't have time to process what was going on.
He had me install a program from "AnyDesk.com" which gave him access to my desktop and all of sudden I could see a new mouse cursor on my screen moving around. This was a huge redflag and I immediately uninstalled the program and asked if he could still see my desktop. He said "no" and tried to get me to install it again. I asked him if I could have his phone number and call him back or I could visit the apple store near me to fix the problem. He said if we lost connection my account would be in danger. He realized I was questioning his tactic so he asked me to search "Alex Paskett" and his badge ID CVE-2018-4199 on the apple site. It did pop up, but not verifying that he was an employee. Once I knew he could no longer see my desktop and was clearly aggitated that I uninstalled the program I hung up.
I have since changed all of my passwords for everything.
