I just updated to Catalina. I have never had to pay for word, powerpoint or excel. They are already installed. Now I have to pay for them? I went to the App Store to update and it wants a subscription now. Why?

I just updated my Mac to Catalina. Now it says I need to update-so I went to app store and updated but now it wants me to pay a yearly fee for word, powerpoint and excel. Why? I have had this computer for over 5 years and have never had to pay for those items.

Perhaps the original versions of those applications came bundled with your Mac when originally purchased or were included at no charge. However older MS-Office versions will not run under the newest operating system, Catalina. So to use MS-Office, you will need to purchase a new version. However you do not need to pay an annual fee -- there are standalone versions that you can buy with a one-time payment. Eventually those may require a purchase of a new version, but that could be ~ 5 years (or more) away. My wife is still using Office 2011. That's 9 years. If she upgrades to Catalina, she will need to purchase the new MS-Office in some form as well.
