can't drag iphoto library, stuck on copying

Hello,

I am trying to move some large files to an external (Seagate S drive- wifi) hard drive using an ethernet cable. I successfully moved my photos library, which took about 15 minutes. Now I am trying to move an iPhotos library as well, the copy process started but seemed to get stuck and suggested it would take days (despite being connected via ethernet) I stopped the copy. Now it prepares to copy, asks if I want to overwrite the existing file but then gets stuck and doesn't move.

The file on the Sdrive says calculating size, but gets no further, and the copy dialogue box on my MBP says 'Copying........zero bytes of 36.38 GB estimated time remaining ..... ' but gets no further and appears stuck.

I also want to move my iMovie library but have read not to move it to a network drive. Can I move it to this wifi S drive?

Thanks for any advice. Best regards, Sally

The issue is down to the fact that a NAS - which is what an S Drive is - is not an appropriate location for either an iPhoto or Photos library. The specific issue you're seeing is probably due to the disk format. These libraries need to be on a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or apfs. Storing them on an inappropriate disk format means you will have these kinds of issues, along with others, including problems sharing, exporting and so on. Further, these libraries do not have the code to negotiate being used over a network share, and so using them in a NAS means there is a very high likelihood of corruption and dataloss.

Use a disk appropriately formatted and with a direct - read USB or Thunderbolt - wired link to your Mac.
