What do I do when I try to update my phone and it just keeps saying software update error occurred

If you're trying to update it wirelessly, see this support article:--> If your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch won’t update

If the issue still persists, try to update it via computer running iTunes (PC) or Itunes/Finder (MAC).

If you don't have a computer, borrow one from your friends, or ask for help at an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider (they are reopening after the temporary lockdown).
