After update to iOS 13.5.1 battery drain is ridiculous and phone overheats

Ever since updating to iOS 13.5.1, my phone's battery drain is ridiculous. Previously, from the time I removed my phone from the charger at 6:30 AM until I put it back on the charger at 11:00 PM, my battery would drain to around 80%. Now, it's at 80% by 8:30 AM. The device is also hot all the time. Clearly, something is wrong with this update, and it needs to be fixed.

Protect & Prolong life of your iPhone's Battery:

  1. About the battery usage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch ...
  2. Batteries - Maximising Performance - Apple (IN)
  3. iPhone Battery and Performance

Try some of these options too.

  1. Avoid Screen Mirroring
  2. Put on Low Power Mode
  3. Put Auto Lock On (1 min):- with low power mode it will be 30 Sec
  4. Put Auto Answer Off
  5. Disable Push notifications for apps you do not use often
  6. Keep your iPhone Face down to prevent notifications to light up screen
  7. Enable Auto Brightness:- Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Auto-Brightness [Enable]
  8. Manually lower brightness from Control Center
  9. If you Want to watch continuous Video. Stream it on TV or a Monitor
  10. Don't force close apps; Apps which are not on frontend screen are paused by the system to save energy. Apps require more energy to re-launch. Apps which are open in the background use large memory is a myth and quitting them is counterproductive
  11. Location services to be allowed only while using the app
  12. Set your iPhone to fetch email and calendar data from internet less frequently
  13. Turning off Background App Refresh
  14. Charge before it drops below 20-30%
  15. Try connecting to trusted Wifi where ever available in stead of Cellular
  16. Enable Airplane mode in areas with bad cellular and wifi coverage. Your phone keeps trying for reconnection with the missing / weak network. This uses lot of energy
  17. Switch off Wifi & Bluetooth while in Roaming or Not in Range
  18. Enable "Wifi Assist" : Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data > Wi-Fi Assist [Enable]
  19. Periodically Check your Battery Health (Settings > Battery > Battery Health)

This update did nothing for the end user. I did not change any settings or change any usage. My phone would go from 6am and still be charged to 60-70% after an entire day. Now it is down to 50% by the time I get to work at 9am. I have turned off all background apps, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Still not better and if I do use my phone it gets hot in my hand as well. What in blue blazes did y’all do????🤨 Thanks apple for screwing up yet again. Get your dang apples in a row and freaking test things out with actual users before releasing a massive screw up. Leave well enough alone. If it’s not broke don’t try to “fix” the freaking thing and make it better. Do your security update and such. But leave all the working things alone.

Does anyone know how to revert back to previous software version. That would be great knowledge for us everyday people to know and do until apple gets there poop in a group and this mess straightened out.

So get your software guys to work and fix what they broke, changed or made improvements to that make our phone “better”. News flash you didn’t make it better!!! I am due for an upgrade maybe time to convert over to Samsung.

This is a user forum. Unless a user comes across a magic fix and posts it [very rare] it is always best to Contact Apple Support directly for assistance - they can run diagnostics on your battery and make specific recommendations. [also, the more people contact them the better idea they get of the scale of the problem].

Of SravanKrA's tips setting your phone to manually fetch mail etc and turning off background app refresh will help a lot.

Try a Force Restart just in case there are legacy issues hanging over from before the update. In quick succession: Briefly press & release the Up Volume, then briefly press & release the Down Volume, then press and HOLD DOWN the Power Button, and keep it held as the screen shows the power off slider, still keeping the Power Button held while the screen goes dark and keep it held until the Apple logo appears, then release it. The phone will restart, hopefully a lot cleaner than before.

Contact Apple Support, they may know if a fix is coming.

Of SravanKrA's tips setting your phone to manually fetch mail etc and turning off background app refresh are ones that save a lot. Settings>Battery usage will indicate which apps are drawing the most power and you can maybe adjust those temporarily until Apple fix the issue [or the phone gets used to the new software - not sure I subscribe to that idea!]

I don't use my phone a lot but after a Force Restart and adjusting fetch and background app refresh am running on a charge from Wed, 20:00 GMT [UK] and now down to 50% so something worked.

Hi Bella_1954

Sadly some updates do cause iPhones to work harder [generating heat], they usually settle down after a few recharge/restart cycles.

If you contact Apple Support they can diagnose any battery issues or whatever.

Turning off Push and changing to Fetch Manually helps [see SravanKrA's tips above] as well as turning off Background App Refresh.

Check Settings>Battery to see what is using the most power and adjust that app if you can. If you know an app using the most power is one you close properly then definitely do a Force Restart - this clears up any legacy issues that have carried over from before the update [if you left a lot of apps 'open' when you update, this can happen] -

Force Restart: In quick succession: Briefly press & release the Up Volume, then briefly press & release the Down Volume, then press and HOLD DOWN the Power Button, and keep it held as the screen shows the power off slider, still keeping the Power Button held while the screen goes dark and keep it held until the Apple logo appears, then release it. The phone will restart, hopefully a lot cleaner than before.

best of luck.

I did all the tips on SravanKrA's message and my phone is still terrible. This morning it was 100% and in 2 1/2 hours it was down to 36% and I didn't use it much. A couple of phone calls and briefly looking at emails. My phone was previously good before this update, I could go a whole day of looking at various apps and playing games. Now it drains so quickly. This is crap!!! Apple need to fix this with another update.

Hi Bella_1954

Following SravanKra's tips won't do any harm anyway.

You don't mention if you have identified which apps/processes are using the power. If you go to Settings, then Battery, down below the Bar Chart it shows you Activity By App. You can touch the blue heading at the top of the minutes/% column to toggle between time an app is active and % of power used. It may be an app is misbehaving or a setting can be tweaked.

You don't mention if you have done a Force Restart [my 30 Jun reply]. That is worth doing. My iPhone battery usage improved dramatically after I did.

The point is that this shouldn’t be necessary. It’s not the way iPhones were intended to be used, if you constantly have to think about turning WiFi, Bluetooth and airplane mode on and off, if you have to turn down brightness and all the other “fixes”

They’re workarounds for a blodged product, iOS 13.5.1. Cure the illness, don’t treat the symptoms..

Dear Bella_1954, basa71

I quite agree with you all.

Apple are getting more useless at changing stuff, making it worse for users who aren't the optimum customer [they still haven't fixed the iPad Photos sync issue from Nov 2019]. This is the worst Update/Battery Draining issue of recent years. All we can do on this forum is make suggestions. They won't work for everybody and it is only slightly better than throwing the thing away.

Personally, I'm looking at reducing my involvement with computer based activity and investigating Android/PC stuff. I have a Nokia 6310 and the iPhone X is still a useful iPod/Camera. I've been using Apple since 1993 but their market [despite the new 'cheap' iPhone] now seems to be for themselves and top-end users who have deep pockets. The everyday user is now just a revenue stream for them to exploit.

Always contact Apple Support as soon as you have an issue - if we all do the same, Apple will know they've done something wrong. Probably won't worry them but you never know...

I am just an aggrieved user with no particular expertise, just sharing ideas. That is the last I am going to say on this forum.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 11 Pro Max ever since the last update (I’ve also seen several similar postings). Setting>Battery shows me that Siri is using 78% of the battery which continues to be the case even after turning Siri and Keyboard Dictation completely off. I’m currently trying another cycle with Application Background Update turned off. We’ll see.

**I did see a posting by someone who said they fixed this problem by logging out of iCloud and then logging back in (merging data). I’ll try that next.**

By the way - in my opinion you can ignore the responses by the “experts” on this forum. Every one that I have seen so far simply repeats the same old “how to improve battery life” steps already published by Apple. That is not your problem as you described it.
