iCLOUD STORAGE - What you pay for

The iCloud Team tell me that I have used up almost all of my 200GB iCloud storage.

When I look at the breakdown of this in Settings on my iPhone I find that 164.3 GB of my usage is attributed to the 'iCloud Drive', so that my storage use on Photos, Voice memos and Backup amount to under 36GB. So what is 'iCloud Drive' and how does it relate to the storage that I've purchased?

Is this just a sharp business practice?

Thank you, lkrupp,

that was very helpful. I found large numbers of encrypted files and folders located in the 'iCloud Drive' of my iPhone. I've deleted these and my storage capacity has been substantially restored. I'm hoping that it won't have any major consequences but at least I can proceed to expand the data storage in areas that I am currently working.

Thanks again,

iCloud Drive is a cloud storage service much like DropBox or Microsoft's OneDrive. On a Mac, while in Finder, select the Go menu at the top of your screen. Now look down and select iCloud Drive. A folder will open containing all the files/datas currently stored in iCloud Drive. On an iPhone open the Files app, select Browse, and select iCloud Drive. There are options on your Mac or iPhone that allow users to upload the content of various apps and data for secure storage. Perhaps you inadvertently enabled one or more of these options causing the large amount of data stored.
