I usually have my iMac in sleep mode and this morning when I powered up to start work the screen froze. I waited 15 minutes and powered it down now when I try to reboot it get halfway thru the load screen and shuts off. Any ideas?

Boot into safe mode. While in the safe mode, you might want to try disk utility's "first aid" (Application --> Utilities --> Disk Utility) to see if any issue with the boot disk.
Reboot -- have your fingers crossed...
