I recently purchased an iPad 12.9 pro and I know there’s a promotion for AirPods with iPad purchase. Do I need to return the one I bought and buy directly from apple?

Its only for people with in education, it's not on every Ipad sale.

Yes you will need to return and buy from apple if you qualify for the promotion
