Ipad 4 won't run ebay app

Ipad 4 running 10.3.3 (updated a couple of weeks ago). Ebay app worked fine. Now a box comes up, saying 'Update required. This version has expired. Please update your app now.' I hit the update box and it exits and does nothing.

I have deleted and reinstalled the ebay app. It is 5.42.0 but says 'This version is not compatible with this device. Do you want to download the last compatible version?'

I hit yes. It downloads and installs but when I attempts to use the app, it goes back to square 1 - the box saying 'Update required.......'

Ebay works OK on Safari but is less convenient than the app.

Has anybody else had this problem? If it is well known, please add a link. Thanks.

eBay app has updated a week ago.

Now, it requires iOS/iPadOS 12.0 or later.

I suspect you won't be able to use your old eBay app for this.

Best you ask the app developer on their website/forum for support.

Update support for iPad4 ended September 2017. The final iOS releases for this model were iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only models) and iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular). iPad4 cannot be updated to any later major version of iOS as it lacks the minimum hardware requirements needed to run more recent versions.

Many App Developers have dropped support for older devices and iOS versions preceding iOS11/12/13 - and have withdrawn older versions of their Apps from the Apple App Store. Withdrawal of Apps supporting older models of iPad is making their utility and usefulness significantly more limited. Once compatible versions Apps are withdrawn, you’ll not be able (re)download or (re)install them. Some platforms, such as eBay, will not longer work with early versions of their App.

If Apps that you need to use now have higher minimum iOS-version requirements, your only option is to replace your iPad with newer model. Of current iPad models, even the entry-level iPad7 supports iPadOS 13.x and the majority of App titles - and has hardware specifications that will vastly outperform your old iPad4.

I hope this information is helpful - if only in clearly stating your current options.

This is NOT Apple's responsibility.

Third party app developers the only one's responsible for what they want to do, or not do with their apps.

Apple has NO control over third party app developers and what decisions they make to do with their apps.

And eBay app/account users WERE sent an email stating that they would be retiring their older iOS 10 version of their app by a certain date.

I knew this as I got email from eBay months ago stating so.

So, an email was sent to all eBay user accounts about the use of their older app.

eBay did the exact same email warnings to when they stopped supporting their eBay app in iOS 9 and earlier.

It was only a matter of time before eBay would decide to end support for their app under iOS 10.

Use the eBay Website.

The eBay website works just fine.

Well technology waits for nobody.

The pace is very fast and one day your hardware will not be able to catch up.

It's happening all the time.

For this thread, here's the reasons:

iPad 4 has a 32-Bit processor with 1 GB RAM.

All new apps can only run on a 64-Bit processor with at least 2 GB RAM.

That's why the iPad 4 cannot update.

Also, CPUs in newer iPad models are also, faster.

And, you forgot to mention all older iPad models that can run the very last iOS version, iOS 12.4.7, like the 2013 iPad Air 1 and iPad Mini 2 and the 2014 iPad Mini 3 ALL have only 1.0 GB of RAM!

The eBay app, currently, needs iOS 12 or later.

So, these older model iPads CAN run the eBay app if the Original Poster ( OP ) chooses to purchase a newer, used iPad.

The older 2014 iPad Air 2 and the 2015 iPad Mini 4, as well as the 2017 iPad 5th generation, which all CAN run the latest iPadOS 13.5, would all be cheaper used, from reputable third party Apple resellers, than a new iPad!

A clear, simple notification did not reach me. Previous changes have always been notified clearly and simply when trying to access the eBay app (rather than being sent round in circles looking for non-existent updates). Even a thicko like me can respond to that. I am sure it is all very simple for people who spend a high proportion of their life keeping up with tech and constant developments. Some of us just want a little more continuity and consideration. Thanks to those who have taken time to respond. I'm sorry it was necessary.

If you look for reputable resellers of Apple used iOS devices, that will NOT have Activation Lock on them, you can find newer, much more recent used devices cheaper than new.

In addition, if you search online and look at various, reputable online Apple device resellers, you can usually find this 2019, 7th gen iPad at various and significant discounts, depending on storage size and whether it is a WiFi ONLY model or a WiFi/cellular data

Thanks, Michel. I will use my Mac, iPhone6 or Safari on the iPad to check until one of these device dies. I appreciate the pleasure that most people get in the latest devices and their subtleties but I just want basic, reliable tools. I posted because I was interested to discover whether I was just missing something and I now understand, thanks to so many contributors. eBay is not so important that I would make another investment in transitory tech. At the end of the day, I just want a tool that works with minimal aggro. Like my cars - if I go for something interesting, I want the machinery (and the pleasure) to last. Not a good analogy but you may see what I mean. Thanks for your time.

Your decision.

I gave you options.

Electronics technology will never be like an automobile.

Everyone who argues about electronics technologies and its fast rate of improvements and obsolescence always uses the automobile argument as their example of what technology should be and it is a very poor and incorrect analogy.

Constant improvements in electronics and hardware and software cannot be handled by older, aging technology.

Are you still using a computer from the 1990's or earlier for both use and to get on the Internet?

Are you still using a TV from the 1960s-2000s?

What about older music gear? Old Appliances?

Even cars.

Are you still regularly driving an old car?

It is the same with any technology. Everything keeps up with the pace of the modern world and doesn't stay stagnate.

If it did, NO company that makes stuff would make any long term money/profits and would not survive!

AND, in the year 2020, we would all be using technology from 20-30 years, ago, or more.

What kind of world would that look like?

Your decision.

I have made it. Thanks.

I gave you options.

I said thank you

Electronics technology will never be like an automobile.

I said it was not a good analogy.

Constant improvements in electronics and hardware and software cannot be handled by older, aging technology.

Are you still using a computer from the 1990's or earlier for both use and to get on the Internet?

We are not discussing a 30yo device.

Are you still using a TV from the 1960s-2000s?

We are not discussing a device from 20-60 years ago.

What about older music gear?

Yes. High-end HiFi from a great maker that still provides support and confidence, is worth more than I paid for it (and sounds better than anything you get easily online).

Old Appliances? Yes. Some are 15 - 25 yo and were bought as good quality items, not cheap, not throw-away. They still do the job they were bought for and do it well without updates or new chips.

Even cars.

Are you still regularly driving an old car? Yes. In addition to our 4yo car we have a 20yo Swedish vehicle that we use interchangeably and which performs beautifully and gives as much pleasure as our more sophisticated newer car. I can still get parts and service with no difficulty. It came from a manufacturer that looks after past customers as well as looking forward. Good business practise.

It is the same with any technology. Everything keeps up with the pace of the modern world and doesn't stay stagnate.

If it did, NO company that makes stuff would make any long term money/profits and would not survive!

Not true. There is a major economic sector that depends on maintaining and improving older items. Manufacturers that support their products and customers do better. We exist to live happily not to maintain a roller coaster.

AND, in the year 2020, we would all be using technology from 20-30 years, ago, or more.

No. We would be getting the best out of the old and enjoying the new. But we would  not be filling junk yards with things just because there are newer versions and taking no account of their continued viability. Many of us have reached a age where we could easily be junked because we have been ‘superseded’. We still have life and usefulness, given an open mind.

What kind of world would that look like?

Better, more tolerant, forward looking, but less wasteful?

I just asked a question and got helpful replies. Thanks to all the helpful responses.

I have updated my iPad to a newer version, this ipad4 is my old iPad my husband uses, he only uses it to access ebay & a couple of social media sites.

People have mentioned on this thread that a email was sent telling people that this was going to happen, I never received this email. And I check my emails every day.

My main argument is though why there couldn’t be a notification saying not to try to update this app if your device is running an older iOS than update needs.
