I am trying to update whattsap on my iPhone but it will not let me it just says cannot update WhatsApp WhatsApp messenger cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID. yet I am unaware of changing my Apple ID. it also says this trying to update other applications but they have not locked me out

Basically, If an app is purchased/downloaded using one Apple ID, then you can't update it with another Apple ID. The app is inextricably linked to the first Apple ID. You'll have to delete it and repurchase/download it again with the second Apple ID.

If the apps show in your purchases history, try signing out of the App Store/iTunes, restart, and sign back in. If that doesn't work and they are in your purchases history, contact iTunes Support.

If you can update other apps except for Whats app, then contact Whatsapp or look at their support site.
thank you for your reply but I cannot update other applications though they are all still working at the moment but WhatsApp has locked me out as it had come to the end of its life the others are still on the go just now
