This link: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263 was not helpful for me. What you should do is, just hold the Top Button to bring up the "power down" option. Slide it to power the iPad off. You can release the button. THEN, turn it back on with the Top Button (hold it this time) and tap the Volume Up button while you're still holding the top button, THAT brought up the recovery mode screen for me.

  1. Plug in iPad to computer
  2. Hold Top Button
  3. Let top button go
  4. Slide to power off
  5. Hold Top Button to turn back on (do not let go)
  6. Push and release Volume Up Button
  7. Recovery mode is enabled! Update or restore from computer.
