Timemachine backups no longer accessible and are called "2020-06-16-160145.inProgress"

I upgraded to another Imac. I wish to use my old backupdisk for Timemachine. I started with new backups but now I cannot acces the old backups. The new mac is however a backupcopy of the old Imac. Somehow the older files are blocked "2020-06-16-160145.inProgress" So a lot of old photos are no longer accessible to me. How can I get to my Imac to see them? It also does not work in Time Machine.

iMac, OS X 10.11

Migrating on my mac is only possible with the backups that are of Catalina. It did not bring up any files of the older OS.
This is not the solution to this problem. The files remain unaccessible.

Hold down the Option key and select "Browse Other Discs…" and then select the same disc. That should let you select the older backups.

You need to do the restoring of files, i.e. iPhoto Library, from within the TM application. This graphic shows how it's done. Just go to the Pictures folder, enter Time Machine, go back to the latest version of the library you can find and restore it.

NOTE: if you can't get into the TM backups hold down the Option key and in the TM menu select "Browse Other Backup discs".

When you initially configured your new Mac, I suspect you may have gone about migrating information in a roundabout way. The correct and painless way to do it is to follow this excerpt from Set up your new Mac - Apple Support:

"You can also let it transfer information from another computer or Time Machine backup ..."

If you do that it will automatically inherit the older one's TM backups, and when it's finished your new Mac will resemble its predecessor as closely as possible.

You may wish to completely erase the new Mac and start over from the beginning. It will probably be the most efficient and least error-prone solution.

I did the install with option of using a Time Machine backup. So initially I ended up with a os High Sierra because my old iMac ( 2011 i7 27 inch) couldn’t upgrade to Catalina. I did the upgrade from the App Store manually. Then I somehow lost acces to the old backups and then they ended up being called 2020 and so on, in progress. Nothing of the iMac can access it.

So if I do a clean install ? Catalina will those files suddenly become visible to me ?

No I bought it secondhand. I wiped the drive clean before I used the Time Machine of my old Mac to install the exact same imac ( configurations apps and so on) then I did the upgrade to Catalina, did a few backups on the same drive and then discovered I couldn’t go back in time with TM and can not acces the old backups anymore. So now I need to do a clean install and then I can acces the TM drive? Or use migration ?

Etrecheck does see the old backups

there is no record of the foto's. They were on a internal disk I accidently erased but fortunally I found the disk on a backup of Timemachine. I should have moved all of those files manually to another disk, but no I left them there and accessed them through lightroom. I went and done a clean install as was suggested here but that did. not bring the foto's back. Migration could not acces my old backups of an older OS.
