iPhone suddenly sending iMessages to Android phone after years of working correctly

My son moved from an iPhone to an Android years ago. I use an iPhone and have been able to send him texts to his Android for years without any problems. They were delivered as a 'Green bubble' SMS text. Suddenly last week my iPhone started sending texts to him as iMessage, 'Blue Bubble' and indicates they were delivered. But he doesn't receive them. I do have his phone number in my contacts as a 'mobile', not as an iPhone. I do have 'Send as SMS' turned on in my messages settings.

Why on earth is this suddenly a problem?!?!

Hello DragonSpeed,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand you're unable to successfully send a SMS message to your son.

It's important to communicate with your love ones. I'll be happy to help.

To help troubleshoot this behavior, I recommend to follow the steps outlined in this helpful article: If you can't send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch These can help resolve the issue you're experiencing.

Now if that doesn't help, I recommend to temporarily turn off iMessage in Settings > Messages. Then, restart your iPhone and turn iMessage back on. From there, see if you can send a SMS message to your son.

We look forward to hearing an update on the results.

Best regards.
