Why can’t I slide the space bar to edit a text?

When writing a text message, and you realize you’ve made a mistake, with my previous iPhones, I used to be able to hold down the space bar and slide up to the spot in the text that I needed to edit, and backspace just that word, but with the iPhone SE, holding down the space bar is not giving me that option. I have to delete the whole sentence or aim REALLY well to get to the incorrect word to fix.
I hope that made more sense.
