The Audio Input Port next to the Headphone Port is Line-In and so you would need to use an amplified Microphone in that Audio Input Port.
Your best bet is to use a USB Mic or the Mic on a USB Web Cam.

Okay thanks, I had never heard of an amplified mic. It seems a contradiction but as you say my best bet is the USB. Thank you and I will eventually get one.
Sorry, amplified as in patched thru an amp or pre-amp to bring it up to line-level.
