Assuming that the tags appended to your post are correct, your iPad is (was?) an iPad4.

Update support for iPad4 ended September 2017. The final iOS releases for this model were iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only models) and iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular). Being an old model, originally released in 2012, the battery will likely be well beyond its expected service life.

Your statement as to “self destruct” sounds rather dramatic - suggesting catastrophic failure of the iPad. Perhaps you could share an accurate description of the actual mode of failure - or, if visible, a photograph of the damage. With more information, it may be possible to suggest a cause.
