All my messages have disappeared from my ipad after updating to IOS 13.5.1. The messages are still on my iphone. I have tried switching off and on the imessages option in the messages settings but no joy. Any ideas?

It may be necessary to sign-out of iCloud on the iPad, force-restart, then sign-in again to iCloud. Doing so should trigger synchronising of messages via iCloud.

Check this setting on both your iPhone and iPad:
Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > iCloud > Messages - set to ON

So, firstly, many thanks for that. Secondly, I set both to ON, then plugged in iphone as per message on iphone, and the messages from my iphone were then backed up to the icloud. But no messages as yet on the ipad. I rebooted ipad but still no messages in there - apart from a few new messages from today. Do I now need to download message from icloud? If so, how do I do this?
Also, I disabled and re-enabled iMessage in the settings in Messages. this gave a message (..reactivating). then on the home screen there is an ! exclamation mark over the green messages icon. When I select it, still no messages in there, but no other info displayed.
