Time Machine on Cataline restarts after verification for 5th time

Hi,

I am trying to backup my new MacBook Air for a fith time. I am using a Synology NAS running Time Machine to backup several machines ( MacBook Pro running El Captain, MacBook Air running High Siera and two MacBook Airs running Catalina ). All other backups work fine, so it is not the NAS.

After it takes over a day to backup 750G on one of teh subsequential scheduled backups I do get a message that the backup need to restart after the verification and the process starts from teh beginning.

Please let me knwo how can I fix this and get teh backup running.

Where can i look to see why teh verification is failing. This si the first time that I have so many issues with MacOS.......

Are you using SMB or AFP to connect to the NAS. AFP doesn't work.

Does the NAS support Time Machine over SMB specification? It is required.

How about the second part. Just using SMB isn't the same as the NAS supporting Time Machine over SMB specification. You might need a firmware update to enable it.

If it is using the specification, then the data is getting corrupted when writing to the NAS.

See if you have a DiskManager software in your NAS that has Samba 4.8 or later. This forum post seems to indicate Synology isn't going to support Time Machine over SMB spec until Samba 4.8.

Hi,

Thank you very much for the information. I am running the latest version of DSM on a new NAS. Not sure if this has Samba 4.8, but the fact is that another MacBook Air running Catalina can happily use teh Time Mashine on the same NAS. and I have the High Sierra machine using SMB and works fine....... Therefore i do expect that the issue is on teh MAC and not on the NAS...

SMB and it seems that everyting is working until it decided to verify :-)

From all the information I can find it seems that the latest version of DSM is running at least Samba 4.10.3. At least the fixes are talking about it.
