GPS TRACKING OF iPad pro

I have avenza maps in my old iPad. When I fly, (on wild land fires) I can track myself on avenza maps. I got an iPad Pro and put avenza maps in that also. When I am near an internet source avenza maps will show my location but when I am flying it does not work. I think I got the iPad Pro model with the built in gps antenna. Not sure why this is not working.

Only WiFi and Cellular models of iPad include GPS capability. On the basis of your description I speculate, with a high degree of certainty, that you have a WiFi Only model.

WiFi Only models can only estimate their position, on the basis of the public IP Address and WiFi network name, whilst they have a network connection. Your approximate geographic location would be estimated from a “database lookup” of (a) your WiFi Network Name (SSID) or detected neighbouring WiFi networks - and (b) the “public” IP Address provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Gotta agree with Lotus. above. Sounds a lot like you purchased the Wifi only model. Identify your iPad model - Apple Support

The Wifi only model requires Wifi and nearby networks to estimate its location.

You need to have purchased th Wifi+Cellular model to get the GPS chip since its part of the cellular hardware. You do not however have to activate cell service on it. You can still use only Wifi, and still have GPS for positioning when away from Wifi.
