OS 10.15.5 + Time Machine incompatibility

Since the OS update to 10.15.5, I've been getting failed TM backups (I have 2 in the apartment and they're both failing with the same error).

The message I get is "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you."

Neither of my machines are actually backing up on TM, instead this loop of error/retry/error happens.

This message is Apple's polite way of saying that your Time Machine backups are corrupted and unusable. This does occur a lot more often on Macs running the Catalina 10.15.x operating system. Apple has not provided a "fix" for this.

You will need to click Start New Backup to have Time Machine erase the existing backup for the Mac that you are using and start over again with a complete new backup of the Mac. This will take a long time.

You will then need to do the same thing with each Mac that displays the message below.

If you are saying that you are clicking Start New Backup and nothing happens or the same message appears, then there are other issues.......like a failing hard drive on the Time Capsule.......that will need to be addressed.

No problem this was after I spoke to Apple Support. I had a hunch... it drove me crazy.

I have Norton for all my computers Mac/PC

for years and this is the first time I had a problem. It happened on my MacBook Pro and Mac Mini also. I knew it had to be something they had in common other than the 2 Time Machine Drives...

As soon as I uninstalled it, it worked perfectly.

What a waste of time..😳...

Waiting on an Update from Symantec....

Norton have suggested this, rather than uninstalling...

We're extremely sorry for the issues you're currently experiencing. We suggest you to reinstall Norton product back on your Mac and follow the below steps to check if that helps resolve the issue. Let us know how it goes.

1. Start Norton.

2. In the Norton main window, click Advanced or Settings.

3. On the left pane, click Protect My Mac.

4. Disable Automatic Scans and Idle Scans.

5. On the left pane, click Firewall.

6. Disable Application Blocking, Connection Blocking and Vulnerability Protection.

7. Check if the issue is reproducible.

8. If the issue is not reproducible, enable the features one-by-one and share which one is causing the issue.

I have moved my Time-Machine backups to a local usb connected drive and it continues to work fine, even with norton installed and running. I had this issue when I was trying to backup over any kind of networked media ... and I tried two different devices and both hard wired and wireless connections. I have not tried playing with norton settings, though!

I have, though, looked at the Symantec support community and found this ...

It appears that a lot of people are running into the issue and norton is being pointed at, for now, for something.

I am also getting the same error on Time Machine backing up to a NAS Drive using MacOS 10.15.6. It started after I installed a copy of Webroot SecureAnywhere for the Mac, the 6 month free trial version. I did notice that the software tried to quarantine some Apple system files and that it tried to quarantine the Time Machine copies. I set it to stop scanning the Time Machine but I had another 'TM must create a new backup notice' today. BTW, if I enter TM it actually had no problem opening and using the supposedly corrupt backup. Just another clue to the mix.
